In case you haven’t heard, Disaster Recovery Centers opened today in DuPage and Grundy Counties to serve people who were affected by the recent severe storms, and flooding. DRC services include help with applying for disaster assistance and finding out about other disaster programs available from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), state and local agencies, and voluntary organizations. Residents must apply with FEMA even if they already provided damage information to local officials, other agencies or organizations.
Perma-Seal News and Information
Downers Grove, IL – On the morning of Thursday, April 18, 2013, thousands of Chicagoland homeowners awoke to flooded basements and streets. At Perma-Seal, what should have been an extremely busy day of answering phones and internet requests for estimates, instead was a day of trying to salvage equipment and setting up a temporary office to try to help those in need. When the Downers Grove office they’ve occupied for over 20 years was overcome with floodwaters from a nearby river, Perma-Seal lost their power, phones and many service vehicles. Yet, in spite of this major catastrophe, they rallied their troops and have been working tirelessly to respond to every inquiry as quickly as possible.
Roy Spencer, owner and president of Perma-Seal, has seen a lot of water damage in his 35 years in the business. Although he and his entire staff have always understood how disastrous water damage can be for homeowners, dealing with the flooding of his office has given him even more empathy for those who are underwater. The good news is that Perma-Seal is back up and running and ready to provide service to those in need. Mr. Spencer sincerely apologizes to anyone that was caused an inconvenience by their situation and appreciates the messages they’ve received from thankful customers whose homes stayed dry during the storm. While they don’t have the power to stop overflowing rivers from engulfing entire neighborhoods, Perma-Seal is determined to help homeowners who are repeatedly dealing with sewer backup due to overwhelmed city sewers. They also have simple solutions for anyone living with an inefficient sump pump or without a battery backup. There are ways to keep basements dry and healthy, and Perma-Seal is ready to help. This holiday weekend provides a great opportunity to relax, maybe play a round of golf, have a BBQ, or visit with family and friends. It's also a great reason to pause and remember why we have a day off.
Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America. It is not a celebration, but rather a day of formal reflection over the cost of freedom; the freedom to speak our mind, to vote, to live where we choose, to be anything we choose to be.
Whether living in a bungalow in Lincoln Square or a split-level home in Des Plaines, many Chicago-area homeowners find that when the weather breaks, they begin to see past the dark, damp clutter of their unfinished basements to recognize the potential value of the extra space. They want to begin using that below-grade area confidently for storage, living and even entertainment purposes.
But they also know that finishing a basement is no small project.
The trick is to do a bit of prep work and avoid jumping right into the remodeling portion of the project. Here are five things you should consider doing before you finish your basement.
For over 33 years, Perma-Seal has been focused on continual improvement and doing the right thing for our Clients, Tribe, Partners and Community. When we were contacted by Schools Count Corp. and heard about their mission to help Chicago schools and students in areas of poverty, we were happy to lend a hand.
Since Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, Schools Count Corp. has been helping people in various parts of the country that have suffered through floods, earthquakes, hurricanes and other similar events. Three years ago, they decided to make a “man-made” relief effort in the city of Chicago by delivering school supplies, winter coats, music instruments and even sporting equipment to schools in need.
Perma-Seal was honored to assist with a recent home rehabilitation project run by Habitat For Humanity in Lansing, IL in order to provide a family in need with a decent, affordable home. Habitat for Humanity Chicago South Suburbs (HHCSS), in partnership with the Cook County Bureau of Economic Development, is taking part in a federal program to help alleviate the dilemma of foreclosed homes in the community. The program allows Habitat to purchase foreclosed properties and transform them into warm, safe, energy efficient homes. The homes can then be sold to qualified, low-income families who meet certain guidelines. Taking part in worthy projects such as these is an ongoing part of fulfilling Perma-Seal’s mission to help make the world a better place and to help homeowners improve the quality of their homes.
This particular project was very unique as the home was nearing foreclosure and was in need of repairs. A wet basement was among the multitude of repairs needed to improve the living conditions of the home. The homeowner had previously experienced seepage and flooding, and did not have a sump pump to help control the water around the house. This was going to be quite a task to repair, so Habitat For Humanity turned to the experts at Perma-Seal for help.
Throughout the entire day yesterday, a slow moving storm rolled through Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana and brought some much needed rain to the area. As much as four inches of rain fell in a mater of hours, with the city of Chicago and the Western Suburbs getting hit the hardest. The prolonged downpours led to flooding and closures of some major roadways, including Lake Shore Drive. By Sunday evening, many cars were found stalled or even completely submerged in water due to the flash floods.
But these storms didn’t just affect traffic. Unfortunately, many homeowners spent their Sunday nights dealing with the water that was flooding into their basements. If you have experienced any seepage or water leaking into your home, it’s important to have it dealt with right away. Ignoring the problem could lead to further damage of your home and family’s personal belongings. And most importantly, it will affect the health of your family. Active water leaks or excessive dampness will help support the growth of dangerous molds in your lower living area. Although you may think it will stay downstairs, it won’t. The mold will make its way upstairs into the living environment of the home, and it could be responsible for causing headaches, allergies, breathing problems, and a number of other health-related issues that your family should not have to contend with!
Last month, Perma-Seal and our advertising agency, the FORT Group, were invited to attend the 2012 Ad Club Awards Ceremony in New Jersey after being nominated for our recent outdoor billboard campaign. Throughout the evening, a select group of agencies

What lies beneathSo, what are the issues you need to ferret out? Moisture, for one. It’s a major contributor to mildew, fungi, and mold, which has been blamed for everything from rashes and runny noses to severe asthma and liver problems. Moisture is also a magnet for spiders, snakes, termites and other nasty pests. Radon is another problem that can originate in dirt or gravel crawl spaces. You can’t see or smell radon—it’s an odorless, colorless gas—but it has major health implications: it’s said to be the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, according to the EPA.
Simple solutionsFortunately, there are relatively simple ways to identify and mitigate these serious health risks. Moisture and mold are commonly spotted with a quick visual inspection or through a “sniff” test: a damp, musty smell is a good sign that there’s excess moisture lurking about. And while radon itself is invisible, radon test kits can uncover the problem. They are widely available, and easy to use. Once you’ve pinpointed the problems, the best first step is to encapsulate your crawl space with a durable, puncture-resistant wall liner that will act as a barrier to insects, gases and odors. You can also help the problem by including a drainage system (a sump pump and a drain tile system) that will redirect any water or moisture that does make its way in. A good last step is spray foam, which minimizes moisture and acts as a nice energy-saver. These are projects an avid DIYer can take on. But, if the idea overwhelms you, there are many professional companiesthat can provide you with a permanent solution—particularly if your problem is radon ... that’s something best left to the experts.
What not to doRegardless of who does the work, there are a couple of things you’ll want to make sure NOT to do. Pumping in concrete, for instance, is an all-around bad idea. That’s because the process introduces hundreds of gallons of water that will ultimately soak into your floor joists and add to the already high humidity levels in your crawl space. Also, pumped concrete floors are different than basement floors; they are chalky and dusty and can introduce more chemicals into the air. Another no-no: spraying closed-cell foam in the crawl space. Spray foam is commonly sprayed at the point where the foundation meets the floor joists. Sealing this joint with a closed-cell material will cause wood rot and severe damage to your home’s structure. Be sure that you use an “open-cell” or “open-weave” type of insulation. No one really wants to think about what lurks in the underworld of a house. But taking a few simple steps to identify and mitigate the problems can protect your family and transform your crawl space into a safe, dry and critter-free area of your home.

Upon returning home and making plans to be married, he had an appendix attack. He was sent to a military hospital for a routine appendectomy where complications during surgery led to him in a coma for two and a half months. He is now suffering with an Anoxic brain injury, which has left him unable to speak, visually impaired, unable to walk and has spasticity in both hands. A while back, we held an Ugly Sump Pump Contest. We announced our winner last week! Terry Bell from Ottawa, IL is excited about his new sump pump. We will be scheduling an installation with him in the following weeks.
Lots of things around your home require a back-up. For those with a basement, a sump pump is a must and a back-up for that unit is a necessity. Think about all you have down there and then about how most insurance companies either cap the amount they will cover or no longer offer flood insurance. The mistake that most people make is not matching up the backup pumps capacity to the main pump. If your primary pump moves 3,000 gallons of water and hour your backup unit needs to do the same. Another consideration is inspecting these systems on a yearly basis. Standard batteries need to be filled with water yearly, sealed batteries cost more but need no maintenance for 5 years. A good back-up system installed will cost around $2,500.00 but it is worth it. Call Perma-Seal at 800-421-7325 to schedule a FREE evaluation of your sump pump system.
