Perma-Seal was recently featured in an online news article from The Bugle. This week marks the 1 year anniversary of the wild and wet weather that rolled through town last spring. Many homeowners were shocked to find that their basement had flooded, or that they had huge puddles of water on the floor. Over a 2 day period, between 5-10 inches of rain fell in northern Illinois and Indiana. As a result of these torrential rains, a lot of homeowners were asking what they can do to prevent this problem in the future, and what can be done to help with the damages.
Perma-Seal has been in the waterproofing business for nearly 35 years now, and they have worked with homeowners throughout the Chicago and northwestern Indiana area. There are many basement water problems that come during the spring months, and as a homeowner, you need to be prepared for the worst. Roy Spencer, owner and president of Perma-Seal, says that many calls received last year at this time were for problems with basement flooding due to city sewer backups, failed sump pumps, subsurface flooding, or from the overflowing streams and rivers in the area.

Downers Grove, IL – On the morning of Thursday, April 18, 2013, thousands of Chicagoland homeowners awoke to flooded basements and streets. At Perma-Seal, what should have been an extremely busy day of answering phones and internet requests for estimates, instead was a day of trying to salvage equipment and setting up a temporary office to try to help those in need. When the Downers Grove office they’ve occupied for over 20 years was overcome with floodwaters from a nearby river, Perma-Seal lost their power, phones and many service vehicles. Yet, in spite of this major catastrophe, they rallied their troops and have been working tirelessly to respond to every inquiry as quickly as possible.
Roy Spencer, owner and president of Perma-Seal, has seen a lot of water damage in his 35 years in the business. Although he and his entire staff have always understood how disastrous water damage can be for homeowners, dealing with the flooding of his office has given him even more empathy for those who are underwater. The good news is that Perma-Seal is back up and running and ready to provide service to those in need. Mr. Spencer sincerely apologizes to anyone that was caused an inconvenience by their situation and appreciates the messages they’ve received from thankful customers whose homes stayed dry during the storm. While they don’t have the power to stop overflowing rivers from engulfing entire neighborhoods, Perma-Seal is determined to help homeowners who are repeatedly dealing with sewer backup due to overwhelmed city sewers. They also have simple solutions for anyone living with an inefficient sump pump or without a battery backup. There are ways to keep basements dry and healthy, and Perma-Seal is ready to help. The nonprofit Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT) is a Chicago-based think-and-do tank that researches, pilots, and advocates solutions for property owners in towns and cities across the Chicago region that are paying millions of dollars to tackle basement and backyard flooding problems. CNT’s Wetrofit service offers fast track solutions for budget-strapped communities aimed at alleviating this flooding, revitalizing neighborhoods and generating jobs.
CNT has established one of the largest family residential green retrofit programs in the nation and has already been piloted in several communities in the Chicagoland area. However, CNT is now making the case to national leaders for the financing of green infrastructure retrofits, knowing that wetrofitting can offer effective and accountable local services to many other areas throughout the country.
Whether living in a bungalow in Lincoln Square or a split-level home in Des Plaines, many Chicago-area homeowners find that when the weather breaks, they begin to see past the dark, damp clutter of their unfinished basements to recognize the potential value of the extra space. They want to begin using that below-grade area confidently for storage, living and even entertainment purposes.
But they also know that finishing a basement is no small project.
The trick is to do a bit of prep work and avoid jumping right into the remodeling portion of the project. Here are five things you should consider doing before you finish your basement.

Lots of things around your home require a back-up. For those with a basement, a sump pump is a must and a back-up for that unit is a necessity. Think about all you have down there and then about how most insurance companies either cap the amount they will cover or no longer offer flood insurance. The mistake that most people make is not matching up the backup pumps capacity to the main pump. If your primary pump moves 3,000 gallons of water and hour your backup unit needs to do the same. Another consideration is inspecting these systems on a yearly basis. Standard batteries need to be filled with water yearly, sealed batteries cost more but need no maintenance for 5 years. A good back-up system installed will cost around $2,500.00 but it is worth it. Call Perma-Seal at 800-421-7325 to schedule a FREE evaluation of your sump pump system.
For over 30 years Perma-Seal has been the leader in keeping homeowners’ basement walls and floors dry, now we’re excited to introduce a whole NEW LEVEL OF DRYNESS: the Active Moisture Management System.
Concrete walls and floors, once sealed and installed with an appropriate drainage system, are an effective barrier against seepage even during the heaviest of downpours. Moisture vapor however can still penetrate even the best concrete and cause excess humidity in a basement or crawl space. High humidity levels lead to mold, mildew, mustiness, and odors.

The reasons for encapsulating your crawl space have been well documented. The hazards of living over a damp or dirt crawl space are many, i.e. mold growth, soil gases and excess energy costs far exceed the cost of having a permanent liner installed. Over the last five years, Perma-Seal has sealed more crawl spaces than any other contractor in the country by far! Now, in our never-ending quest to improve our products & services, we have enhanced our system.

With the housing market in a slump, more and more homeowners are investing in their existing homes. One of the best, long-term investments for a house is basement waterproofing for added usable space and possible finishing. Emecole claims that it is wiser and healthier to first minimize humidity, prevent deadly soil gases from entering a home, eradicate mold, and stop damaging water leaks before they happen. Roy Spencer, Owner of Perma-Seal Basement Systems in Downers Grove, IL, says, “It is a lot easier and less expensive to fix these problems before than it is after you have finished your basement.” Fortunately, basement waterproofing and prefinishing can be done on a budget while also making the downstairs living space attractive and safe for children.
