It can be frustrating to look into your attic, see plenty of insulation, and still feel cold drafts or uneven temperatures throughout the house. Many homeowners assume that if the attic has enough insulation, the attic cannot possibly be part of the problem.
The missing piece is often air leakage.
Insulation and air sealing work together, but they do different jobs. Insulation slows heat moving through the ceiling, while air sealing helps stop conditioned air from escaping through cracks, gaps, and penetrations between the house and attic.
At Perma-Seal, we do not evaluate an attic based only on how many inches of insulation are visible. We also want to know how much air is moving through the home and whether hidden openings in the attic floor are affecting comfort.
Insulation and Air Sealing Solve Different Problems
Attic insulation is designed to resist heat flow. During winter, it helps slow heat moving from the living space into the cold attic. During summer, it helps slow attic heat from moving down into the rooms below.
Air leakage is different. Warm indoor air can still move through small openings in the ceiling even when those openings are covered by insulation.
That can happen around electrical wiring, plumbing pipes, framing joints, recessed fixtures, attic access points, and other penetrations through the ceiling. Adding more insulation over those areas can improve R-value, but it does not necessarily close the openings underneath.
This is why a home can appear to have plenty of insulation and still have drafts, uncomfortable rooms, or a heating and cooling system that seems to run more than expected.
Hidden Air Leaks Can Add Up Quickly
The attic floor is rarely one solid, uninterrupted surface. Walls end there, wiring and plumbing pass through it, and different mechanical components often penetrate the ceiling below.
Wall top plates are one place we look closely. Gaps around these framing connections can create pathways for air movement between the living space and attic.
Wiring and plumbing penetrations can do the same thing. Recessed fixtures, bathroom fan housings, and duct penetrations may create additional leakage points depending on how the home was built.
Attic access is another common weak point. A hatch or pull-down staircase interrupts both the insulation layer and the air barrier. If it is not properly sealed and insulated, the hallway or room below may feel noticeably different.
Any one of these openings may seem small. Across an entire attic, however, a lot of small leaks can add up to significant uncontrolled airflow.
Why Adding More Insulation May Not Fix the Draft
When a homeowner has an uncomfortable second floor, adding more insulation can seem like the obvious answer. Sometimes additional insulation is needed, but insulation depth should not be the only thing we look at.
If the attic floor underneath the existing insulation has unsealed penetrations, adding another layer on top leaves those leaks in place. It can also make them more difficult to access later.
This is one reason Perma-Seal removes the existing attic insulation before installing new insulation. Once the old material is out, the attic floor is exposed and our team can get to cracks, gaps, and penetrations that would otherwise remain buried.
We can then air seal the accessible leakage points before installing new blown-in insulation. That allows us to address both parts of the problem instead of simply increasing insulation depth.
Blower Door Testing Helps Us See the Bigger Picture
Air leakage is not always obvious during a visual inspection. That is where blower door testing becomes useful.
A blower door uses a calibrated fan to change the pressure inside the house and measure how much air is moving through the building envelope. It helps us understand how airtight the home is and whether uncontrolled airflow may be contributing to comfort problems.
Two houses can have roughly the same amount of attic insulation and still perform very differently. If one has significantly more air leakage, that house may feel draftier and have more uneven temperatures even though the insulation looks similar.
This is why we use blower door testing as part of our attic insulation process. It gives us more information than simply measuring how deep the insulation is.
Drafts and Uneven Temperatures Give Us Clues
Not every draft comes from the attic, and not every uncomfortable room is an insulation problem. Windows, exterior doors, ductwork, HVAC performance, and other parts of the home can also affect comfort. The pattern of the problem helps us decide where to look.
If the second floor is consistently harder to heat or cool, certain bedrooms are always different from the rest of the house, or the home loses comfortable temperatures quickly after the HVAC system shuts off, the attic becomes one of the areas worth evaluating.
We also look at whether the problem is worse during extreme weather or happens throughout the heating and cooling season. That can help separate an attic performance problem from an HVAC or room-specific issue.
What We Check When a Well-Insulated House Still Feels Drafty
When a homeowner tells us the attic already has plenty of insulation, we still want to understand what is underneath it and how the attic is performing as a whole.

No single item automatically tells us what needs to be done. We want to determine whether the problem is inadequate insulation, air leakage, inconsistent coverage, or something elsewhere in the home.
That is why looking at insulation depth alone can be misleading.

A comfortable attic system needs both thermal resistance and control over air movement. Insulation slows heat transfer, while air sealing helps stop conditioned air from escaping through openings in the attic floor.
