FEMA Helping Chicagoland Homeowners Affected By Recent Storms

In case you haven’t heard, Disaster Recovery Centers opened today in DuPage and Grundy Counties to serve people who were affected by the recent severe storms, and flooding. DRC services include help with applying for disaster assistance and finding out about other disaster programs available from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), state and local agencies, and voluntary organizations. Residents must apply with FEMA even if they already provided damage information to local officials, other agencies or organizations.

FEMA is advising consumers to be wary of con artists that occasionally act as legitimate contractors after disasters like the flooding a couple weeks ago. Some might offer to clean up your debris, but then dump it somewhere nearby, leaving you responsible for the cleanup. Or others sometimes demand a deposit to rebuild a home, and then they disappear with your money. Another tip is to be cautious with anyone who is knocking on doors or calling owners of damaged homes claiming to be an approved building contractor, government official or FEMA-authorized contractor. FEMA recommends checking the credentials of local businesses in your area and to only use a reliable, licensed contractor. When contracting locally, consumers will be able to locate the contractor to resolve any issues that may arise.

Keep This in Mind!

FEMA does not authorize builders or contractors. FEMA inspectors may visit a home to verify claimed damages, but they will never recommend that you hire specific contractors. Nor will federal or state employees ever solicit or accept money for public services in disaster assistance or recovery.
