With all of the recent storms, rain and flooding that we’ve had recently in the Chicago area, we’ve had a lot of people contact us about their basement. Many called as they saw their basements filling up with water. No one really plans on waiting until their basement is flooded to take action, but it often happens that way. Most people don’t think of their basement flooding, until they are knee-deep in water. Removing water from your basement and cleaning up a big mess can cost a lot of money and be a big headache. You don’t have to spend thousands on a complete basement waterproofing system to make sure that you’re not caught in a bad situation.

The Basement or Crawl Space – Damp and Humid

The one feature that sets the basement apart from other levels in your home is the ambient dampness. That’s not surprising is it?  After all, a deep hole was dug to accommodate the basement, and the earth is typically wet and cold (about 55 degrees Fahrenheit) year round. Solid concrete is a pretty good thermal conductor — it lets heat pass right through it — and is somewhat porous; is it any surprise that your basement or crawl space feels damp and humid? For years, cellars were built under homes with the full expectation that they would be a cool, wet space, not fit for habitation but ideal for root vegetables and vintage wines. Today, expectations have changed. People recognize the potential value of their below-ground space, be it a basement or a crawl space, and want to be able to use it confidently for storage, living, and even for entertainment purposes.

What happens when you send a talented group of volunteers from Perma-Seal to make a difference? More than you could ever imagine! Perma-Seal Basement Systems joined forces with Global Hope, Inc. in their efforts to make a difference in New Orleans’ Lower 9th Ward. Back in April of 2007, several Global Hope board members visited New Orleans for Jazz Fest. While they were there, the seized the opportunity to volunteer with Common Ground Relief and quickly realized the ongoing need for help in the area. Upon their return, they immediately began planning a pilot service trip and sought business involvement.
