What is Basement Seepage, and Do I Have it in My Downers Grove Home?

What is Basement Seepage, and Do I Have it in My Downers Grove Home?

Named recently by Forbes Magazine as the eighth Friendliest Town in America, Downers Grove - a village in DuPage County, Illinois, has one of the nation's most educated citizenry and is number 5 in CNN's Best Places for a Healthy Retirement List. To continue being a healthy retirement place though, residents must know what basement seepage is, and if it is lurking underneath their homes.

Why? Basement seepage can cause a myriad of problems that range from structural issues to issues for your family’s health. In a nutshell, basement seepage occurs when water and moisture find their way into a home's basement. This is a reason for concern because excess moisture can lead to mold and fungal growth, as well as deterioration of your home's foundation, among other problems.

Mold and fungi can lead to health problems, while floods can deteriorate wooden floor joists and support beams, cause rust to form in steel constructs, and ruin appliances and other items stored in the basement.

Solutions to Basement Seepage

If your home has basement seepage, you might need some expert help. Calling a Perma-Seal professional will ensure you find the source of your basement's seepage problem and cure it.

A professional can determine if the seepage comes from the floor or the walls, if the water is coming from the gutters or the water table underneath, and they can also provide solutions to prevent basement seepage from ever happening again.

Solutions can range from a simple installation of a sump pump or a drainage system, or it can mean rerouting the gutters, or filling the cracks in the walls and floor.

Benefits to Downers Grove Homeowners

A dry and water-free basement means you don't have to worry about you and your family's health, or if your home’s foundation is intact, or if the appliances and other stuff you have in the basement are free from rust and flooding.

If you want the peace of mind that comes with a dry basement, call Perma-Seal today.

What is Basement Waterproofing and is it Important For Aurora, IL Homes?

Aurora, IL is the second most populated city in the State of Illinois. The city's population is 199,932 and ranks in the top 50 fastest growing cities in the United States since 2000. For its residents, many ask what basement waterproofing is and is it important? Well, for a city that gets 40 inches of precipitation every year, yes it is important.

But what is basement waterproofing? Basically, it refers to the techniques used to prevent water from entering your basement. Done by professionals, waterproofing is always needed if a structure is built at ground level or below ground because of the hydrostatic pressure exerted below basement walls by the higher water table.

This pressure pushes water into the cracks of the floors and walls of a basement, and can result in mold, fungus, decay and other moisture related problems.

Waterproofing Basement Solutions

There are various techniques that can be used to effectively waterproof a basement, though each differ in ideology and design. These are: interior and exterior drains, sump pumps, underground downspout extensions, and more.

To learn more about each product or system, and to determine which method would be most effective for your home's basement, you can contact a Perma-Seal professional who can take you step-by-step through the whole process.

Benefits to Aurora Residents

The benefits of waterproofing basements range from having a mold-free basement that won't endanger the health of you and your family, to having the peace of mind that decay and rot of your home's foundation is prevented.

To learn more, call a Perma-Seal professional today and find out how to have a safer and drier basement.

Preventing a Wet Basement in both Chicago, IL and Northwest Indiana

Perma-Seal will be glad to help you with preventing a wet basement. Even if you aren’t the handiest homeowner in the world, it doesn’t mean that you can’t help to protect the basement of your home from dangerous leaks. In fact, there are many things that you can easily do on your own to help minimize the chance of coming home or waking up to a flooded basement. Please take a look at the list below and feel free to contact us if you have any questions!

1. Maintain your window wells – A lot of homeowners might not give much thought to the window wells around their basement. However, if they’re leaking, it’s only a matter of time before this moisture gets inside of your home and causes problems. Make sure that your basement windows have a tight seal against the foundation of your home. If you notice any gaps, you can fill them with a waterproof caulking material. Also, make sure that you have a cover over your window well to prevent unwanted debris or small animals from getting inside and clogging the interior drain.

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America. It is not a celebration, but rather a day of formal reflection over the cost of freedom; the freedom to speak our mind, to vote, to live where we choose, to be anything we choose to be.

Pain in the Drain: The Holidays Can Be Tough on Your Plumbing

Pain in the Drain: The Holidays Can Be Tough on Your Plumbing

By Roy Spencer, Perma-Seal The winter holidays are certainly a festive time for many homeowners, but they can also be a particularly tough time for your plumbing and sewer lines. The incorrect disposal of cooking grease, overuse of garbage disposals and improper or excessive disposal of paper waste can resulted in clogged drains and are frequent culprits of pipe-clogging sewer problems during this time of year. If you don’t catch a blockage in time, your household plumbing systems can become inoperable and, what’s worse, raw sewage can back up through toilets, tubs and sinks into your home. Here’s how to avoid trouble with your sewer lines this holiday season:

Even Dry Basements Require Inspection

Even Dry Basements Require Inspection

Hanging up a new, clean calendar is a ritual for many at the beginning of each year, and we quickly begin the process of filling in all of those important dates. Along with fun things like birthdays and anniversaries, we start making appointments to have our teeth cleaned, the furnace checked, the oil in our cars changed, or even a yearly checkup with our doctor. Thank goodness for those handy reminders we get in the mail to help us remember to schedule the all-important annual checkups!

While you’re making your list of important things to check on an annual basis, do not forget about scheduling a basement inspection. A dry basement is an invaluable asset to your home,  even more important when you have a finished basement. The small cost of maintaining your lower living space is minimal compared to the amount of trouble and heartache you would experience if you had several inches of water suddenly appear downstairs.

Perma-Seal Introduces Active Moisture Management System (AMMS)

For over 30 years Perma-Seal has been the leader in keeping homeowners’ basement walls and floors dry, now we’re excited to introduce a whole NEW LEVEL OF DRYNESS: the Active Moisture Management System.

Concrete walls and floors, once sealed and installed with an appropriate drainage system, are an effective barrier against seepage even during the heaviest of downpours. Moisture vapor however can still penetrate even the best concrete and cause excess humidity in a basement or crawl space. High humidity levels lead to mold, mildew, mustiness, and odors.
