Perma-Seal Donation Provides Storage Solution for DuPagePads

Last June, Perma-Seal began a basement waterproofing project at DuPagePads' Employment and Education building at 705 West Liberty in Wheaton, IL. The project was completed by September 2014. It was a big job which involved sealing off the basement area so that it wouldn't allow seepage inside. The basement of the building is used to store diapers, hygiene products, pads for sleeping, clothing, and more - all items which must be kept dry so that participants in their program can live healthy, safe lives.

DuPagePads' mission is to end homelessness in DuPage County. They provide interim (overnight) housing and permanent supportive housing plans.

Preventing Aurora, IL Basement Flooding

The second most populated city in the state of Illinois, Aurora was once a moderately-sized manufacturing city that has grown to become one of the fastest growing cities in the US. Also called the "City of Lights," due to it being one of the first cities in the US to use electric street lights, the city is also culturally diverse due to it being inclusive and tolerant to immigrants.

Residents, however, often find their simple and quiet lives shaken with basement flooding. This is due in part of the city's annual precipitation of about 40 inches and being prone to heavy snowfalls and blizzards in the winter.

Melting Snow is Leading to Wet Basements in Chicago - Ways to Prevent Water Damage

Temperatures are on the rise in the Chicago area, and while it means that going outside is a little more bearable, it also means that the snow is starting to melt. This melting snow means wet basements for a lot of homeowners in the region. This basement moisture can cause serious damage if left neglected for too long. In fact, it could cause the development of nasty mold and mildew. This could make your family really sick. What's more is that this basement moisture could cause serious problems for the structural integrity of your home.

Wet basements cause wooden materials to rot, warp, decay, and deteriorate. This means that your wooden support beams and floor joists are going to start rotting away. These materials are partially responsible for holding up the weight of your home, so it's important that they are strong, stable, and in relatively good shape.

Preventing a Wet Basement in both Chicago, IL and Northwest Indiana

Perma-Seal will be glad to help you with preventing a wet basement. Even if you aren’t the handiest homeowner in the world, it doesn’t mean that you can’t help to protect the basement of your home from dangerous leaks. In fact, there are many things that you can easily do on your own to help minimize the chance of coming home or waking up to a flooded basement. Please take a look at the list below and feel free to contact us if you have any questions!

1. Maintain your window wells – A lot of homeowners might not give much thought to the window wells around their basement. However, if they’re leaking, it’s only a matter of time before this moisture gets inside of your home and causes problems. Make sure that your basement windows have a tight seal against the foundation of your home. If you notice any gaps, you can fill them with a waterproof caulking material. Also, make sure that you have a cover over your window well to prevent unwanted debris or small animals from getting inside and clogging the interior drain.

Pain in the Drain: The Holidays Can Be Tough on Your Plumbing

Pain in the Drain: The Holidays Can Be Tough on Your Plumbing

By Roy Spencer, Perma-Seal The winter holidays are certainly a festive time for many homeowners, but they can also be a particularly tough time for your plumbing and sewer lines. The incorrect disposal of cooking grease, overuse of garbage disposals and improper or excessive disposal of paper waste can resulted in clogged drains and are frequent culprits of pipe-clogging sewer problems during this time of year. If you don’t catch a blockage in time, your household plumbing systems can become inoperable and, what’s worse, raw sewage can back up through toilets, tubs and sinks into your home. Here’s how to avoid trouble with your sewer lines this holiday season:

Promoting Green Solutions

The nonprofit Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT) is a Chicago-based think-and-do tank that researches, pilots, and advocates solutions for property owners in towns and cities across the Chicago region that are paying millions of dollars to tackle basement and backyard flooding problems. CNT’s Wetrofit service offers fast track solutions for budget-strapped communities aimed at alleviating this flooding, revitalizing neighborhoods and generating jobs.

CNT has established one of the largest family residential green retrofit programs in the nation and has already been piloted in several communities in the Chicagoland area. However, CNT is now making the case to national leaders for the financing of green infrastructure retrofits, knowing that wetrofitting can offer effective and accountable local services to many other areas throughout the country.

Much Needed Rain Storm Causes Major Flooding

Much Needed Rain Storm Causes Major Flooding

Throughout the entire day yesterday, a slow moving storm rolled through Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana and brought some much needed rain to the area. As much as four inches of rain fell in a mater of hours, with the city of Chicago and the Western Suburbs getting hit the hardest. The prolonged downpours led to flooding and closures of some major roadways, including Lake Shore Drive. By Sunday evening, many cars were found stalled or even completely submerged in water due to the flash floods.

But these storms didn’t just affect traffic.  Unfortunately, many homeowners spent their Sunday nights dealing with the water that was flooding into their basements. If you have experienced any seepage or water leaking into your home, it’s important to have it dealt with right away. Ignoring the problem could lead to further damage of your home and family’s personal belongings.  And most importantly, it will affect the health of your family.  Active water leaks or excessive dampness will help support the growth of dangerous molds in your lower living area.  Although you may think it will stay downstairs, it won’t. The mold will make its way upstairs into the living environment of the home, and it could be responsible for causing headaches, allergies, breathing problems, and a number of other health-related issues that your family should not have to contend with!

Even Dry Basements Require Inspection

Even Dry Basements Require Inspection

Hanging up a new, clean calendar is a ritual for many at the beginning of each year, and we quickly begin the process of filling in all of those important dates. Along with fun things like birthdays and anniversaries, we start making appointments to have our teeth cleaned, the furnace checked, the oil in our cars changed, or even a yearly checkup with our doctor. Thank goodness for those handy reminders we get in the mail to help us remember to schedule the all-important annual checkups!

While you’re making your list of important things to check on an annual basis, do not forget about scheduling a basement inspection. A dry basement is an invaluable asset to your home,  even more important when you have a finished basement. The small cost of maintaining your lower living space is minimal compared to the amount of trouble and heartache you would experience if you had several inches of water suddenly appear downstairs.
