Those Troublesome Downspouts
During prolonged rainy periods, it is impossible to keep water away from your foundation; the ground becomes saturated and water will inevitably settle into the excavated clay bowl around your basement/crawl space.
It is always a good idea however to keep as much water away as possible by properly grading the earth away from the home and extending the downspouts 8-10' away from the foundation.
The challenges involved with ABOVE GRADE extensions are:
-
Keeping the extension from being knocked off the downspout
-
Soil & landscape erosion at the end of the downspout
-
Extending over a sidewalk or traffic area
-
The unsightly appearance of long extensions
Perma-Seal's underground EXTEND-A-SPOUT SYSTEM is the ideal way to move roof water away from the home. First, a 4" solid underground pipe is installed (including under sidewalks) approximately 10 feet to an area that will drain away from the foundation. Then a BUBBLER POT is installed; when a pot is full it's attached solid lid will lift and allow the water to bubble out unto the lawn. A guard to is then installed between the downspout and the solid pipe to screen out any leaves or tennis balls so that the system will be permanent and maintenance free.
Sump Pump extensions can be installed in a similar fashion except that an IceGuard fitting is substituted for the guard used for leaves/balls. This device will ensure against your discharge line freezing during the winter months. Of course both lines can be extended more than 10' where desired or needed.
